Living in the Presence Print E-mail

Increasingly, instant messaging is seen as an underpinning application for converged communications. It is regarded as a prime navigational device in next-generation communications and collaboration environments. Callers can leverage communications more efficiently. Not only can instant messaging help users locate other users and determine their availability, it can also provide a resource for users to define how they want to be accessed. ?We believe that instant messaging can become the ?hub? of a communications hub-and-spoke model?especially on the mobile device,? says Arvinder Gujral, Director of Product Marketing at Geodesic (www.geodesic.com). Geodesic has just launched version 4 of its mobile IM application, Mundu IM (first brought out in 2004 and claims 200,000 users) with an expanded platform footprint to include Windows Mobile Smartphone and plans to include Pocket PC and Symbian versions soon. But beyond an increasing platform agnosticism, in its latest version of Mundu IM, Geodesic is touting interoperability with all major IM networks on a single user-friendly interface and what Gujral considers ?a world first: users can cross-conference AIM, MSN, and Yahoo! IM services through a single chat window.?

Securing the IP Enterprise

Mobility is one of the hot buzzwords in IP networking spaces. Mobile workers, mobile devices, and ubiquitous service coverage present the holy grail of the workanywhere professional. This broadening of access, coupled with integration of VoIP and video services, creates a problem for enterprise security managers. Deperimeterization of the network has raised the bar on what it takes to effectively protect an enterprise. Enterprise businesses have implemented traditional security mechanisms ranging from firewalls and session border controllers to intrusion detection and prevention systems. They worked when the perimeter was a single connection to the Internet. In today's business environment, with highly mobile professionals connecting via all manner of devices, the perimeter is both nowhere and everywhere. But it's no longer a fixed, visible point in the network topology.
